JUNIOR INDIGENOUS MARINE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CADETS PROGRAM LAUNCH
Set on the Tiwi Islands in Northern Australia and featuring Shannon Kitchener and Jacob Parmigiani, the film explores the amazing fly fishing on Goose Creek (Andranangoo) for the legendary barramundi and saratoga. It also sheds some light on an exciting project which is giving the Indigenous youth of the island an opportunity to pursue their passions.
THE JUNIOR GUIDE PROGRAM
It is the Junior Guide Program which has grabbed the attention of the students, as it proposes not only a viable future, but a future that is invested in the culture and traditions of their peoples.
Currently 15 students rotate as Junior Guides in the Tiwi Islands, Cairns, Sydney and Banubanu. Next year the program will be expanded to to provide over 30 Junior Guiding positions across Australia.
ANDRANANGOO – GOOSE GREEK

Great Barrier Reef Maritime College’s
MORE students will be able to find their sea legs with a major upgrade to the ship simulator at the Great Barrier Reef Maritime College.
The Portsmith based college will receive $100,000 from the State Government to upgrade its simulator equipment and facilities for students studying marine engine driver qualifications.
Tiwi Islands Teen Snag Enviable Career
The traditional waters around the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory are fertile and rich.
But young Indigenous residents casting the net wide on land, looking for a job, often end up empty handed; the unemployment rate there is almost double the national average.
From Tiwi Islands to Sydney Harbour on The Big Fish
When you come from a place like the Tiwi Islands where the only cross city traffic is a wandering water buffalo, and the commuter pressure revolves around catching the morning tide, Sydney Harbour, on a Sunday morning, must be enough to make your head spin, but Tiwi Islander Anthony Guy, has taken it all in his stride.
Anthony is part of an innovative program training young fishing guides to work in their traditional waters.

Ashley Vines has been our wet season foreman for the past 3 years. Now using his experience learnt on the Island Ashley has has been selected as a Westpac Future Scholar, an incredible honour.
His specific research interests include; sustainable economic development in regional and remote areas, Australian Indigenous Studies and enhancing Australia’s economic, social, political and cultural engagement with Asia.
Introducing our new Westpac Scholars
Being awarded a Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship is incredibly humbling. In 2017, I was working on the Tiwi Islands, assisting to run a small farm and working with a group of Indigenous students.
A Westpac Scholarship means that I am far closer to being able to translate my grassroots experiences and learnings to improve Australia’s policy space around sustainability and inclusion for all.
